Dutch Brass copper alloy Mirror
This is a brass copper Alloy framed mirror, depicting a traditional Dutch scene. The technique of the relief work is chasing and repoussé. After a lifetime of it being cleaned with a variety of polishing compounds the identity of the frame was nearly unrecognisable, with thick layers of cleaning compounds solidified upon it. A straightforward disassemble, clean and reassemble was carried out. As Verdigris can be a popular effect on copper alloy antiques, I created a stable patination before using a protective coating of Microcrystalline wax. It should be noted than on disassembling the mirror it was evident that nothing was holding the mirror in place, so I made a polymer resin frame that was formed to hold the mirror in place as well as support behind the fragile copper alloy panels and prevent distortion.
